Ten New NEI-03-08 Good Practice and Needed Requirements

Recently, the EPRI MRP released the interim guidance letter, "Implementation of NEI 03-08 Needed and Good Practice Interim Guidance Requirements for Management of Thermal Fatigue" endorsed by the Primary Materials Management Program (PMMP) Executive Committee. Ten new NEI 03-08 Good Practice and Needed requirements are introduced in an effort to address a significant recent increase in thermal fatigue cracking operating experience.

Structural Integrity has worked closely with EPRI and the nuclear industry on thermal fatigue issues for many years. Thus, we are well-positioned to assist utilities in understanding the new requirements and providing engineering and non-destructive examination support for related actions. We can help in several areas:

  • MRP-146 Program Gap Analysis - reviewing your plant's MRP-146 program documents and determine what plant specific actions are necessary for compliance.
  • MRP-146 Contingency Analysis to Support Augmented Inspections - preparing pre-inspection readiness calculations for rapid disposition of inspection results if indications are discovered. The effort involves gathering design input, determining allowable flaw sizes and preparing the calculation text to achieve a 24-36 hour turnaround time for the evaluation.
  • MRP-192 Contingency Analysis to Support Augmented Inspections - preparing pre-inspection readiness calculations for rapid disposition of RHR mixing tee inspection results if indications are discovered. In addition, SI has developed proprietary quality assured software that can conservatively determine crack growth associated with thermal mixing to justify continued operation.
  • Non-Destructive Examination Support - providing NDE services to support plant thermal fatigue examinations required by the interim guidance. In addition, we can provide 3rd party review support for examination preparedness (including coverage calculations) and for a UT Level III independent assessment of analysis results.
